


{"id":24748,"date":"2025-11-07T02:39:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T21:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=24748"},"modified":"2025-11-10T15:36:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T10:06:14","slug":"junk-dna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/junk-dna\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Junk DNA?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Junk DNA:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In genetics, the term junk DNA refers to <strong>regions of DNA that are noncoding.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>DNA contains instructions<\/strong> (coding) that are used <strong>to create proteins<\/strong> in the cell.<\/li>\n<li>However, the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/dna\/\" target=\"_blank\">DNA<\/a> contained inside each cell is vast, and <strong>not all of the genetic sequences<\/strong> present <strong>within a DNA<\/strong> molecule actually <strong>code for a protein.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Some of this noncoding DNA<\/strong> is <strong>used to produce non-coding RNA components<\/strong> such as transfer <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/rna\/\" target=\"_blank\">RNA<\/a>, regulatory RNA and ribosomal RNA.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>However, <strong>other DNA regions<\/strong> are not transcribed into proteins, nor are they used to produce RNA molecules, and their <strong>function is unknown<\/strong>. These are <strong>known as junk regions of DNA.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>proportion of coding versus noncoding DNA varies<\/strong> significantly <strong>between species.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In the <strong>human genome,<\/strong> for example, almost all <strong>(98%) <\/strong>of the DNA is<strong> noncoding<\/strong>, while in bacteria, only 2% of the genetic material does not code for anything.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>However, <strong>over the years, researchers<\/strong> have <strong>found evidence<\/strong> to suggest that <strong>junk DNA<\/strong> may <strong>provide some form of functional activity<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Some lines of evidence suggest that fragments of what were <strong>originally non-functional DNA<\/strong> have <strong>undergone the process of exaptation<\/strong> throughout evolution.\n<ul>\n<li>Exaptation <strong>refers to<\/strong> the <strong>acquisition of a function<\/strong> through <strong>means other than natural selection.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is DNA?<\/h3>\n<p>DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms. Nearly every cell in a person\u2019s body has the same DNA. Most DNA is located in the cell nucleus (where it is called nuclear DNA), but a small amount of DNA can also be found in the mitochondria (where it is called mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA).
