to the French President.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Kalamkari Painting<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a highly popular form of <\/span><b>hand-painted or block-printed cotton textile and paintings,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> practised in <\/span><b>Andhra Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It came up as a textile tradition during the reign <\/span><b>of Qutb Shahis at Golconda<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 16-17th century.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cThe word \u2018Kalam\u2019 meant pen, while \u2018Kari\u2019 <\/span><b>meant craftsmanship.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Kalamkari Painting Techniques<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process of creating Kalamkari begins by <\/span><b>soaking the fabric<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a mixture of <\/span><b>astringents and buffalo milk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, followed by drying it in the sun.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The outlines of the design in <\/span><b>red, black, brown, and violet are drawn using a mordant,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after which the cloth is dipped in an alizarin bath.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Wax is then applied<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the areas that remain undyed, and the fabric is immersed in indigo dye.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the wax is removed, the remaining areas are hand-painted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artists use a <\/span><b>bamboo or date palm stick with<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fine hair attached to create design contours, <\/span><b>applying natural dyes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extracted from roots, leaves, seeds, and minerals like iron and copper.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Kalamkari Painting Styles<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is broadly divided into two distinct styles based on the regions where the art form <\/span><b>developed\u2014Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Srikalahasti Kalamkari<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is practised in Srikalahasti of Tirupati district and is done entirely by hand using the kalam (pen).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This form is characterized by freehand drawing <\/span><b>and intricate detailing.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Theme:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It <\/span><b>portrays mythological figures and themes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> religious iconography, temple architecture, and Hindu deities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Machilipatnam Kalamkari<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also <\/span><b>known as Pedana Kalamkari,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> developed in Pedana near Machilipatnam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is deeply influenced by Persian art due to the <\/span><b>patronage of the<a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/mughal-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Mughals<\/a> and the Golconda Sultanate.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Theme:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It uses <\/span><b>block-printing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> techniques, <\/span><b>focusing on floral and geometric designs.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common motifs include intricate <\/span><b>patterns of leaves, flowers, cartwheels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creepers, and birds like parrots and
