{"id":24943,"date":"2025-10-27T04:26:56","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T22:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=24943"},"modified":"2025-10-29T14:36:51","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T09:06:51","slug":"shield-tail-snake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/shield-tail-snake\/","title":{"rendered":"Shield-tail snake"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Shield-tail snake:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The newly discovered species of shield-tail snake is <strong>named as Uropeltis caudomaculata<\/strong>, in reference to the <strong>yellow spot<\/strong> that it has on each side of the base of its tail.<\/li>\n<li>The new species is distinguished primarily by its increased <strong>number of ventral scales<\/strong> and its exclusive distribution along the eastern escarpment of the Western Ghats from Meghamalai to approximately 15 km east of Munnar.<\/li>\n<li>It is known to be found in <strong>only three localities: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/srivilliputhur-megamalai-tiger-reserve\/\" target=\"_blank\">Meghamalai Tiger Reserve<\/a> in Tamil Nadu, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/periyar-tiger-reserve\/\" target=\"_blank\">Periyar Tiger Reserve<\/a><strong> and Yellapetty<\/strong>, Munnar in Kerala.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key facts about Shield-tail snakes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These are <strong>non Venomous snakes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They belong to the Uropeltidae family of primitive snakes <strong>endemic to peninsular India &amp; Sri Lanka.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They have a large <strong>keratinous shield<\/strong> at the tip of the tail and hence called shield tailed snakes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:<\/strong> They are found in the <strong>Western Ghats and some parts of Peninsular India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> Inhabit <strong>hilly forests<\/strong> &amp; occupy tunnels in the leaves, humus, rocks &amp; logs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They are burrowing species found upto 1 feet below the soil.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Keratin?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a fibrous structural protein of hair, nails, horn, hoofs, wool, feathers, and of the epithelial cells in the outermost layers of the skin.
