{"id":25005,"date":"2024-07-14T05:40:06","date_gmt":"2024-07-14T00:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25005"},"modified":"2025-04-07T14:47:35","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T09:17:35","slug":"what-is-chromium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-chromium\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Chromium?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Chromium:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>naturally occurring element<\/strong> found in rocks, animals, plants, soil, and in volcanic dust and gases.<\/li>\n<li>It is a very hard gray solid with a <strong>metallic luster.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There are two forms: <strong>trivalent chromium<\/strong>, which is safe for humans, and <strong>hexavalent chromium<\/strong>, which is a <strong>toxin.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Properties<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It <strong>does not tarnish in air<\/strong>, when heated it borns and forms the green chromic oxide.<\/li>\n<li>Chromium is <strong>unstable in oxygen<\/strong>, it immediately produces a thin oxide layer that is impermeable to oxygen and protects the metal below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Applications<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Chromium use in iron, steel, and nonferrous alloys <strong>enhances hardenability and resistance<\/strong> to corrosion and oxidation.<\/li>\n<li>The use of chromium to <strong>produce stainless steel and nonferrous alloys<\/strong> are two of its more important applications.<\/li>\n<li>Other applications are in alloy steel, plating of metals, pigments, leather processing, catalysts, surface treatments, and refractories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Where is Sukinda Valley?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is in the <strong>State of Orissa<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It contains 97% of India&#8217;s <strong>chromite ore deposits<\/strong> and one of the largest open cast chromite ore mines in the world.<\/li>\n<li>Approximately 70% of the surface water and 60% of the drinking water contains <strong>hexavalent chromium.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Brahmani River is the only water source for the residents and treatment facilities are extremely limited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1:What is an alloy?<\/h3>\n<p>A metal alloy is a substance that combines more than one metal or mixes a metal with other non-metallic elements.
