


{"id":25013,"date":"2024-07-14T08:41:43","date_gmt":"2024-07-14T03:11:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25013"},"modified":"2025-04-07T14:51:16","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T09:21:16","slug":"what-is-quantum-navigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-quantum-navigation\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Quantum Navigation?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Quantum Navigation:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Where satellite navigation relies on the signal bouncing back from space, quantum navigation <strong>focuses on the movement of a single atom tracked under cryogenic conditions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Instead of a satellite floating in space, a quantum navigation <strong>system is within each individual vehicle<\/strong>, <strong>with measurements<\/strong> being made \u201c<strong>at point of use\u201d.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This means the <strong>signal \u201cdoesn\u2019t drift\u201d,<\/strong> making <strong>interception much harder<\/strong> to achieve.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Global navigation satellite systems<\/strong> (GNSS) like GPS are <strong>susceptible to<\/strong> accidental and <strong>deliberate outages<\/strong>, whereas <strong>quantum navigation is \u2018unjammable\u2019<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>But quantum navigation systems are <strong>unlikely to replace GNSSs any time soon.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>This is because, <strong>ultra-cold atoms are needed<\/strong> to achieve quantum navigation, and the <strong>equipment is currently sizable<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What is GPS?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a <strong>space-based radio-navigation system<\/strong> consisting of a <strong>constellation of satellites<\/strong> broadcasting navigation signals and a network of ground stations and satellite control stations used for monitoring and control.<\/li>\n<li>Currently, <strong>31 GPS satellites<\/strong> orbit the Earth at an altitude of approximately 11,000 miles, <strong>providing users with<\/strong> accurate <strong>information on position, velocity, and time anywhere<\/strong> in the world and in <strong>all weather conditions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is operated and <strong>maintained by the U.S. Department of Defense<\/strong> (USDOD).<\/li>\n<li>The USDOD originally put the satellites into orbit for military use, but they were made available for civilian use in the 1980s.<\/li>\n<li>GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, with <strong>no subscription fees or setup charges.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How GPS Works?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>GPS <strong>satellites circle<\/strong> the <strong>Earth twice a day<\/strong> in a precise orbit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Each satellite transmits a unique signal<\/strong> and orbital parameters that allow <strong>GPS devices<\/strong> to decode and <strong>compute the precise location of<\/strong> the <strong>satellite<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>GPS receivers use this information<\/strong> and trilateration to <strong>calculate a user&#8217;s exact location.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Essentially, the <strong>GPS receiver measures the distance to each satellite<\/strong> by the <strong>amount of time it takes to receive<\/strong> a transmitted <strong>signal<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>With distance measurements from a few more satellites, the receiver can determine a user&#8217;s position and display it electronically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is Navigation with Indian Constellation (NaVIC)?<\/h3>\n<p>NaVIC or the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) uses seven satellites to provide real-time positioning and timing services in India and an area extending up to 1,500 km from the country&#8217;s borders.
