students from Boleng in Arunachal Pradesh recently took part in a three-day school exhibition centred on river conservation and sustainable infrastructure, with a strong focus on the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Siang Upper Multipurpose Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>proposed 11,000 MW<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hydropower project on the <\/span><b>Siang River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> near the Geku Village in the<\/span><b> Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Siang River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the <\/span><b>upper course of the Brahmaputra <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">River.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is envisioned as one of <\/span><b>India\u2019s largest hydropower reservoirs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and as a<\/span><b> strategic countermeasure to China\u2019s proposed 60,000 MW super dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Brahmaputra) in <\/span><b>Tibet\u2019s Medog County.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This project aims to not only harness hydropower but <\/span><b>also to control flooding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>erosion downstream<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><b>upper Brahmaputra basin.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The area is primarily<\/span><b> inhabited by the Adi Tribe,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an indigenous community with a strong connection to the Siang River.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Developers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Jointly undertaken by the<\/span><b> National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and the North Eastern Electric
