{"id":25049,"date":"2024-07-15T06:48:22","date_gmt":"2024-07-15T01:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25049"},"modified":"2025-10-13T13:44:30","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T08:14:30","slug":"manjeera-wildlife-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/manjeera-wildlife-sanctuary\/","title":{"rendered":"Manjeera Wildlife Sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Manjeera Wildlife Sanctuary:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a wildlife <strong>sanctuary and a reservoir<\/strong> located in the Medak district of <strong>Telangana<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Originally a crocodile sanctuary<\/strong>, <strong>today<\/strong> more than <strong>70 species of birds<\/strong> are spotted here, and is home to the <strong>vulnerable species of mugger crocodile<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The sanctuary <strong>follows the course <\/strong>of river<strong> Manjeera<\/strong>, a <strong>tributary of Godavari,<\/strong> and abuts the <strong>Manjeera reservoir<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>man-made reservoir<\/strong> that provides water for irrigation and also <strong>drinking water<\/strong> for the twin cities of <strong>Hyderabad and Secunderabad.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The reservoir has <strong>nine small island<\/strong>s. These islands <strong>contain extensive marshy fringes<\/strong>, which act as <strong>nesting sites for water birds<\/strong>. Additionally, thick cover of trees also provides nesting spots for birds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetation<\/strong>: <strong>Dry Savannah type<\/strong> of vegetation is found in the sanctuary. The reservoir supports <strong>both submergent and emergent types<\/strong> of vegetation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora<\/strong>: Being a <strong>freshwater ecosystem<\/strong>, the sanctuary is home to many <strong>plant species likeTypha, Babool, Prosopis, Ipomoea<\/strong> and Acacia Ipomea, Vallisneria, Eichhornia, and Reeds, among others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The sanctuary is a riverine habitat supporting <strong>mugger crocodile<\/strong> and <strong>fresh water turtles.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The sanctuary is home to <strong>prawns, molluscs<\/strong>, and <strong>fishes<\/strong> like catla, rohu, murrel, eel, karugu, and chidwa.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Indian hare, wild boar<\/strong>, <strong>mongoose,<\/strong> and jackal are also present.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the Ramsar Convention?<\/h3>\n<p>It is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of Ramsar sites.
