{"id":25068,"date":"2024-07-15T10:05:47","date_gmt":"2024-07-15T04:35:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25068"},"modified":"2025-10-07T15:15:27","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T09:45:27","slug":"sim-swapping-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sim-swapping-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"SIM Swapping Scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About SIM Swapping Scam:\u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It occurs when a <strong>malicious actor convinces<\/strong> your carrier to transfer your phone number to a new SIM card in their possession.<\/li>\n<li>This can grant them <strong>access to your calls,texts, two-factor authentication<\/strong> codes, and potentially even financial accounts linked to your number.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Modus operandi<\/strong>: In the SIM swap scam, fraudsters first take personal details such as phone numbers, bank account details, and addresses with the <strong>help of phishing or vishing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>After receiving the personal information, fraudsters visit the mobile operator\u2019s retail outlet, posing as the victim with a forged ID proof, and report a fake theft of the victim\u2019s SIM card and\/or mobile phone.<\/li>\n<li>By doing this, they attain a duplicate SIM.<\/li>\n<li>Notably, scamsters can get a duplicate SIM even when the original is working, as they reported a <strong>theft of the original SIM card.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Unlike other scams, where scamsters trick people into giving OTPs and private information on a phone call, the SIM swap scam <strong>doesn\u2019t require direct communication<\/strong> with the victims.<\/li>\n<li>However, fraudsters do give missed calls to their victims so that the latter leave their phones and ignore the lost network connectivity.<\/li>\n<li>When the SIM is swapped, the accused gains control of the entire SIM.
