{"id":25167,"date":"2025-11-07T11:29:29","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T05:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25167"},"modified":"2025-11-07T17:33:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T12:03:10","slug":"un-water-convention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/un-water-convention\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Water Convention"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>UN Water Convention Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bangladesh became the first country in South Asia to join the U.N.\u2019s Water Convention earlier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About UN Water Convention<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also known as the <\/span><b>Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was adopted in <\/span><b>Helsinki in 1992<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and entered into force in 1996.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>History of UN Water Convention<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was originally negotiated as a regional framework for the <\/span><b>pan-European region.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following an amendment procedure, <\/span><b>since March 2016 all UN Member States can accede<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Features of UN Water Convention<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a unique <\/span><b>legally binding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instrument promoting the sustainable management of shared water resources, the implementation of the <\/span><b>Sustainable Development Goals,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the prevention of conflicts, and the promotion of peace and regional integration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It requires <\/span><b>Parties to prevent, control<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and reduce transboundary impact, use <\/span><b>transboundary waters in a reasonable <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and equitable way and ensure their sustainable management.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parties bordering the same transboundary waters have to cooperate by entering into specific agreements and establishing joint bodies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a framework agreement, the Convention <\/span><b>does not replace bilateral and multilateral agreements for specific basins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or aquifers; instead, it fosters their establishment and implementation, as well as further development.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), which services the UN Water Convention.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Significance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a powerful tool to promote and operationalize the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its SDGs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/rivers\/bangladeshs-accession-to-the-un-water-convention-has-a-ripple-effect-that-could-cause-problems-with-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DTE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UN Water Convention is also known as the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes which was entered into force in 1996.
