{"id":25195,"date":"2024-07-20T08:32:39","date_gmt":"2024-07-20T03:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25195"},"modified":"2025-10-14T12:11:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T06:41:10","slug":"adam-bridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/adam-bridge\/","title":{"rendered":"Adam&#8217;s Bridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Adam&#8217;s Bridge:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Adam\u2019s Bridge, also known as the <strong>Ram Sethu Bridge<\/strong>, <strong>connects Rameswaram Island,off <\/strong>the southeast <strong>coast of India,to Mannar Island<\/strong>, <strong>off the<\/strong> northwest <strong>coast of Sri Lanka.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>separates the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gulf-of-mannar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gulf of Mannar<\/a> (southwest) <strong>from the Palk Strait<\/strong> (northeast).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The bridge is a 48 km <strong>long chain of natural limestone shoals.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Some of the sandbanks are<\/strong> dry, and the <strong>sea in the area is very shallow<\/strong>, being only 1 to 10 metres deep in places, <strong>whichhinders navigation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Geologic evidence suggests that Adam\u2019s Bridge represents a <strong>former land connection between India and Sri Lanka.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Ram Setu is <strong>mentioned in the epic Ramayana<\/strong>, as the bridge constructed by Lord Rama and his vanara (monkey) army.\n<ul>\n<li>The bridge was <strong>constructed to cross over to Lanka to rescue Goddess Sita<\/strong> from the clutches of the demon king Ravana.<\/li>\n<li>In Valmiki\u2019s Ramayana, the bridge is described as Sethubanthan.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>As per <strong>Islamic legend<\/strong>, <strong>Adam used this bridge to reach Adam\u2019s Peak in Sri Lanka.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Rameshwaram <strong>temple records suggest<\/strong> that Adam\u2019s bridge was<strong> completely above<\/strong> sea <strong>level till 1480<\/strong>. It was <strong>submerged<\/strong> in the shallow sea <strong>due to natural calamities.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is a Strait?<\/h3>\n<p>A strait is a narrow waterway between two pieces of land that connects two large bodies of water. Well-known straits include the Bering Strait, which links the Arctic Ocean with the Bering Sea and separates the continents of Asia and North America at their closest point. The Strait of Gibraltar, located between Spain and Africa, connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean.
