It has an integral role in meeting the targets set out in UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. The IMO sets policies for international shipping and sets regulations on safety, security, and environmental best practices.
