{"id":25237,"date":"2025-01-19T04:12:42","date_gmt":"2025-01-18T22:42:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25237"},"modified":"2025-04-07T16:29:11","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T10:59:11","slug":"upper-karnali-hydro-electric-power-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/upper-karnali-hydro-electric-power-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Upper Karnali Hydro-Electric Power Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Upper Karnali Hydro-electric Project:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>900 MW run-of-the-river<\/strong> hydropower project being developed on the <strong>Karnali River in Nepal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The project will <strong>supply power to Nepal, India, and Bangladesh<\/strong> for a <strong>contracted period of 25 years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The project is being <strong>developed by GMR Upper Karnali Hydro Power Limited (GUKHL)<\/strong>, a <strong>subsidiary of GMR Group India, Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA<\/strong>), and SJVN Green Energy.<\/li>\n<li>The project is being developed on a <strong>build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>GUKHL and NEA<\/strong> are currently owning the project, having <strong>ownership stakes of 73% and 27%, respectively.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is estimated to generate 3,466 million units of electricity while offsetting approximately two million tons of greenhouse gas emissions a year.<\/li>\n<li>It will feature a <strong>concrete gravity dam<\/strong>, headrace tunnels, a fish pass, feeder tunnels, surge and pressure shafts, and silt flushing tunnels.<\/li>\n<li>The project consists of 8 turbines, each with 112.5 MW nameplate capacity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Development status<\/strong>: The project <strong>construction<\/strong> is expected to <strong>commence from 2027.<\/strong> Subsequent to that it will enter into commercial operation by 2031.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: Which is the highest hydro power project in India?<\/h3>\n<p>The Tehri Hydropower Complex in Uttarakhand is the highest hydroelectric power project in India.
