General Assembly in\u00a0<strong>1966 and came into force in 1976.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The ICCPR, together with the\u00a0<strong>Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/strong>\u00a0and the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights, are considered the\u00a0<strong>International Bill of Human Rights.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The ICCPR obligates countries that have ratified the treaty to protect\u00a0<strong>and preserve basic human rights<\/strong>, such as:\n<ul>\n<li>The right to life and human dignity; equality before the law; freedom of speech, assembly, and association; religious freedom and privacy; freedom from torture, ill-treatment, and arbitrary detention; gender equality etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Covenant compels governments to\u00a0<strong>take administrative, judicial, and legislative measures<\/strong>\u00a0in order to protect the rights enshrined in the treaty and to provide an effective remedy.<\/li>\n<li>As of 2024, 174 countries have been party to this Covenant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India became a party<\/strong>\u00a0to the ICCPR<strong>\u00a0in 1979<\/strong>\u00a0and has undergone three such reviews so far, the last being in 1997.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the United Nations Human Rights Council?<\/h3>\n<p>United Nations Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body within the United Nations whose mission is to promote and protect human rights around the world.
