


{"id":25297,"date":"2024-07-24T03:06:43","date_gmt":"2024-07-23T21:36:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25297"},"modified":"2025-10-03T12:48:38","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T07:18:38","slug":"tax-incidence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tax-incidence\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Tax Incidence?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Tax Incidence:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Tax incidence (or incidence of tax) is an economic term <strong>for understanding the division of a tax burden between stakeholders<\/strong>, such as buyers and sellers or producers and consumers.<\/li>\n<li>There are <strong>two forms <\/strong>of tax incidence.\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>initial incidence<\/strong> (also called <strong>statutory incidence<\/strong>) of a tax is the <strong>initial distribution <\/strong>among taxpayers <strong>of a legal obligation to remit tax receipts<\/strong> to the government.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>established by law<\/strong> and <strong>tells us which individuals or companies<\/strong> must <strong>physically send tax payments to state<\/strong> and local treasuries.\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>final incidence<\/strong> (also called <strong>economic incidence<\/strong>) of a tax is the <strong>final burden of<\/strong> that <strong>particular tax on<\/strong> the <strong>distribution of<\/strong> economic <strong>welfare in society<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is also referred to as the <strong>tax burden faced by individuals in their roles as consumers, workers,<\/strong> and investors.\n<ul>\n<li>For example, the legal incidence of corporate income taxes typically falls on companies, but the economic incidence of the tax is shifted forward to others, in the form of higher prices for consumers, lower wages for workers, reduced returns to shareholders, or some combination of the three.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>difference between<\/strong> the <strong>initial incidence and <\/strong>the <strong>final incidence is called tax shifting.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>tax incidence depends upon<\/strong> the <strong>price elasticity of supply and demand<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If the demand for<\/strong> a <strong>good change significantly with <\/strong>a <strong>change in price<\/strong>, then a <strong>good is elastic<\/strong>\u2014likely a non-necessity like a new car or home goods.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Little to no change in demand in relation to price<\/strong> means a <strong>good is inelastic<\/strong>, and consumers will continue to purchase the good as prices go up. Examples of inelastic goods include petrol and cigarettes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taxes on inelastic goods<\/strong> like cigarettes <strong>shift the tax incidence to the consumerwho<\/strong> will <strong>continue to purchase<\/strong> the product, <strong>despite the price increase<\/strong> from the tax.<\/li>\n<li>Conversely, if a<strong> tax <\/strong>is levied<strong> on an elastic good<\/strong>, the <strong>tax incidence falls on<\/strong> the <strong>producerbecause<\/strong> the <strong>new price increase<\/strong> is likely to <strong>reduce the demand <\/strong>for the good.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Tax buoyancy and Tax Elasticity?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tax-buoyancy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tax buoyancy<\/a> explains the relationship between the changes in government\u2019s tax revenue growth and the changes in GDP.
