{"id":25365,"date":"2024-07-26T11:17:07","date_gmt":"2024-07-26T05:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25365"},"modified":"2025-10-06T12:31:41","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T07:01:41","slug":"state-of-the-worlds-forests-2024-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/state-of-the-worlds-forests-2024-report\/","title":{"rendered":"State of the World\u2019s Forests 2024 Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About State of the World\u2019s Forests 2024 Report:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/food-and-agriculture-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\">Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)<\/a> of the United Nations.<\/li>\n<li>It provides a comprehensive analysis of forest conditions and trends.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Highlights <\/strong>of the Report:\n<ul>\n<li>It highlighted a <strong>decline in deforestation rates<\/strong> compared to previous decades, with several countries showing significant improvements.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The data also reveals a disturbing picture of the <strong>challenges forests face due toclimate change.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In 2020, the global forest covered<\/strong> approximately 4.1 billion hectares (ha), or <strong>31 percent of the land area.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Russia, Brazil, Canada<\/strong>, the <strong>United States<\/strong> of America, and <strong>China<\/strong> account for <strong>54 percent of<\/strong> the <strong>global forest area<\/strong>, in descending order.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Another 10 countries<\/strong>, <strong>including Australia,<\/strong> the <strong>Democratic Republic of Congo<\/strong>, <strong>Indonesia<\/strong>, <strong>Peru, and India<\/strong>, contribute about <strong>two-thirds of the global forest area<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The report estimated that between 1990 and 2020, approximately 420 million ha of forest were converted to land use.<\/li>\n<li>However, <strong>deforestation rates fell<\/strong> from 15.8 million ha per year between 1990 and 2002 to 10.2 million ha between 2015 and 2020.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Deforestation rates in Africa were 4.41 million ha, 2.95 million in South America, and 2.24 million in Asia.<\/li>\n<li>It also noted <strong>10 countries<\/strong> recording <strong>annual gains in forest area in 2020<\/strong>, which <strong>include China, Australia, India<\/strong>, Chile, Viet Nam, Turkey, the United States of America, France, Italy, and Romania.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>India<\/strong> gained 2,66,000 hectares of forest annually from 2010-2020, <strong>ranking third globally in forest area gains<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>global mangrove area<\/strong> was recorded to be 14.8 million ha, out of which <strong>South and Southeast Asia<\/strong> contributed almost <strong>44 percent<\/strong> of the total global area.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>rate of gross global mangrove loss decreased<\/strong> by 23 percent between the two recent decades (2000-2010 and 2010-2020), and the <strong>rate of gain in mangrove area also decreased <\/strong>slightly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asia<\/strong> was the <strong>major contributor to mangrove loss and gains.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is estimated that about 340-370 million ha (<strong>equivalent to less than half the land area of Australia<\/strong>) of the earth\u2019s land area <strong>is impacted by annual fire.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Satellite data revealed that <strong>total fires in 2023 emitted<\/strong> 6,687 megatons of carbon dioxide globally, <strong>more than double the emissions <\/strong>contributed<strong> by the European Union by burning fossil fuels.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger and improve nutrition and food security.
