


{"id":25453,"date":"2024-07-29T11:12:36","date_gmt":"2024-07-29T05:42:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25453"},"modified":"2025-04-07T18:04:08","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T12:34:08","slug":"bohai-gulf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bohai-gulf\/","title":{"rendered":"Key Facts about Bohai Gulf"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Bohai Gulf:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>innermost gulf of<\/strong> the <strong>Yellow Sea<\/strong> on the coast of <strong>Northeastern and North China.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is sometimes called <strong>Bohai Sea,<\/strong> or <strong>Bo Hai<\/strong> for short; in <strong>earlier times<\/strong> it was <strong>called theGulf of Chili <\/strong>or the <strong>Gulf of Pechili.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is approximately 78,000 sq.km in area, and its <strong>proximity to Beijing<\/strong>, the capital of China, makes it <strong>one of the busiest seaways<\/strong> in the world.<\/li>\n<li>The Bohai Gulf is <strong>enclosed by<\/strong> the <strong>Liaodong Peninsula<\/strong> (northeast) <strong>and<\/strong> the <strong>Shandong Peninsula <\/strong>(south).<\/li>\n<li>Among the most <strong>important cities<\/strong> on the Bohai Gulf are <strong>Dalian and Tianjin<\/strong>; <strong>its shoresform<\/strong> three of the most <strong>famous bays<\/strong> in the country: <strong>Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay,<\/strong> and <strong>Laizhou Bay.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Yellow River<\/strong>, <strong>China\u2019s second longest river<\/strong>, <strong>discharges into the gulf<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>There are both onshore and offshore <strong>petroleum deposits<\/strong>, and several oil refineries are located there as well as other industries.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Facts about Yellow Sea:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>marginal sea of <\/strong>the <strong>western Pacific Ocean.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It is situated <strong>between mainland Chinato the west<\/strong> and north, the <strong>Korean Peninsula to the east<\/strong>, and the <strong>Shandong Peninsula<\/strong> and <strong>Liaodong Peninsula<\/strong> to the south.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>connects<\/strong> with the <strong>Bohai Sea to the northwest<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Size<\/strong>: Also <strong>referred to in China as Huang Hai<\/strong> and <strong>in North and South Korea as<\/strong> the <strong>West Sea,<\/strong> the Yellow Sea is 870 kilometres long and 556 kilometres wide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Depth<\/strong>: It is <strong>one of the largest shallow areas of continental shelf <\/strong>in the world, with an average depth of 44 metres and a maximum depth of 152 metres.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inflow<\/strong>: Several major rivers, including the <strong>Yellow River<\/strong> and the <strong>Yangtze River<\/strong>, <strong>discharge<\/strong> into the Yellow Sea.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Islands<\/strong>: The Yellow Sea is dotted with numerous islands, <strong>the largest<\/strong> of which include <strong>Jeju Island (South Korea),<\/strong> the <strong>Shandong Peninsula islands<\/strong> (<strong>China<\/strong>), <strong>and Ganghwa Island <\/strong>(<strong>South Korea<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>Climate<strong>:<\/strong> The climate is characterized by very <strong>cold, dry winters<\/strong> and <strong>wet, warm summers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Currents:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>warm current <\/strong>of the Yellow Sea is a <strong>part of the Tsushima Current<\/strong>, which diverges near the western part of the Japanese island of Kyushu and flows at less than 0.5 mile (0.8 km) per hour northward into the middle of the sea.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Along the continental coasts, southward-flowing currents prevail<\/strong>, which <strong>strengthen<\/strong> markedly <strong>in the winter monsoon period<\/strong>, when the water is cold, turbid, and of low salinity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is a Gulf?<\/h3>\n<p>The Gulf is a portion of the sea that is almost surrounded by land except one narrow opening. Gulfs are formed when a giant rock collapses or when a piece of land sinks. This causes a big indentation in the area, and the water eventually fills it up.
