{"id":25461,"date":"2024-07-30T11:48:06","date_gmt":"2024-07-30T06:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25461"},"modified":"2025-04-07T18:07:42","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T12:37:42","slug":"alderman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/alderman\/","title":{"rendered":"What is meant by Alderman?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Alderman:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Alderman is a term that originated from the <strong>combination of &#8220;old&#8221; and &#8220;man<\/strong>,&#8221; indicating an <strong>older or experienced person<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Initially, it referred to elders of a clan or tribe but later evolved to denote the king&#8217;s viceroys, regardless of age.<\/li>\n<li>Eventually, it took on a more specific meaning as the &#8220;chief magistrate of a county&#8221; with both civil and military responsibilities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>By the 12th century<\/strong> CE, it began to be <strong>associated with municipal governments<\/strong> and used to <strong>describe officers of municipal bodies<\/strong>. <strong>This usage <\/strong>of the term<strong> continues to<\/strong> the <strong>present day.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Alderman in India:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In India, a <strong>General Body of a Municipality or <\/strong>Municipal <strong>Corporationis comprisedofelected representatives<\/strong> called <strong>Councillors<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Councillors<\/strong> can <strong>nominate experts<\/strong> in their disciplines of the city to become members of this body. <strong>These nominated members<\/strong> are <strong>called \u2018Aldermen\u2019.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They <strong>cannot<\/strong>, however, <strong>cast votes in<\/strong> the <strong>mayoral election.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>As <strong>ward committee members<\/strong>, they have the <strong>right to assist<\/strong> the <strong>house in taking decisions of public importance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Case of Delhi:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>As per the <strong>Delhi Municipal Corporation Act of 1957<\/strong>, the <strong>Lieutenant Governor<\/strong> of the National Capital Territory of Delhi has the <strong>authority to nominate ten individuals<\/strong> who are <strong>above the age of 25 to the corporation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>These individuals are believed to <strong>have specialised expertise<\/strong> or experience in municipal administration.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is a Municipal Corporation?<\/h3>\n<p>Municipal Corporations, also known as Nagar Nigams, are the highest level of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in India.
