


{"id":25477,"date":"2025-08-01T11:07:43","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T05:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25477"},"modified":"2025-08-01T12:31:24","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T07:01:24","slug":"charles-darwins-frog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/charles-darwins-frog\/","title":{"rendered":"Darwin\u2019s Frog"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Darwin&#8217;s Frog Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, Chile has launched a new effort to save the endangered Darwin&#8217;s frog.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Darwin&#8217;s Frog<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darwin&#8217;s frog (Rhinoderma darwinii ), also called the <\/span><b>southern Darwin&#8217;s frog.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Features of Darwin&#8217;s Frog<\/b>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is unique among <\/span><b>amphibians for its brooding habits.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a tiny amphibian with leaf-like skin whose <\/span><b>males carry tadpoles within pouches in their mouths.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>diurnal creature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning it sleeps at night and is mostly active during daytime.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When threatened by predators, <\/span><b>the frog plays dead.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It lays very still on the forest floor or floating in a stream.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It measures 3 cm (1.18 inches), was discovered in Chile&#8217;s southern Chiloe islands by Charles Darwin during his 1834 trip around the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Distribution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a rhinodermatid frog native to the forest <\/span><b>streams of Chile and Argentina.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Habitat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is found in a <\/span><b>variety of vegetation types<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it appears that a mixture of grassland, mossy areas, coarse woody debris, and young trees and bushes in a mature native forest provides its optimum habitat requirements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diet:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Darwin&#8217;s frog feeds on insects and other arthropods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>actually comprises two:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the endangered <\/span><b>Rhinoderma darwinii<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><b>Southern Darwin&#8217;s frog<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the <\/span><b>Rhinoderma rufum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><b>Northern Darwin&#8217;s frog<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which is categorized as <\/span><b>&#8220;critically endangered&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has already virtually disappeared.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Threats:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Forest fires, climate change, invasive species and urbanization have hurt the humid forests of southern Chile and Argentina where Darwin&#8217;s frog typically lives.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/energy-and-environment\/chile-takes-new-steps-to-save-endangered-darwins-frog\/article69878357.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TH<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charles Darwin\u2019s frog belongs to the family Dicroglossidae, a large group of Asian frogs with over 220 species.
