{"id":25505,"date":"2024-08-01T02:38:43","date_gmt":"2024-07-31T21:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25505"},"modified":"2025-10-10T12:38:18","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T07:08:18","slug":"sturgeon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sturgeon\/","title":{"rendered":"Sturgeon"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Sturgeon:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is among the most endangered <strong>fish species globally.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These species have been around since the <strong>age of the dinosaurs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:<\/strong> These <strong>northern hemisphere fishes<\/strong> can be found in large river systems, lakes, coastal waters and inner seas throughout Azerbaijan, Bulgaria,other European countries and North America.<\/li>\n<li>Since 1998, international trade in all species of sturgeons has been <strong>regulated under <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cites\/\" target=\"_blank\">CITES<\/a> owing to concerns over the impact of unsustainable harvesting of and illegal trade in sturgeon populations in the wild.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threats:<\/strong> Sturgeons are heavily <strong>exploited globally for their roe<\/strong>\/eggs (caviar) and meat. This has led to a steep decline in populations worldwide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Highlights of the report<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Of the six sturgeon species formerly native to the <strong>Danube river<\/strong>, two \u2014 the <strong>European sturgeon<\/strong> (Acipenser sturio) and the <strong>ship sturgeon<\/strong> (A. nudiventris) \u2014 are considered <strong>locally extinct.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The four sturgeon species in the Danube Basin are listed as <strong>Threatened<\/strong> by the IUCN Red List.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>stellate sturgeon<\/strong> (A. stellatus), the <strong>Russian sturgeon<\/strong> (A. gueldenstaedtii) and <strong>beluga<\/strong> (Huso huso) are <strong>Critically Endangered;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>While the <strong>sterlet <\/strong>(A. ruthenus) was recently raised to a higher threat category and has been listed as <strong>Endangered<\/strong> since 2022,\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The Lower Danube Basin is among the last European regions with <strong>self-reproducing sturgeon populations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Living Planet Report?<\/h3>\n<p>It is published biennially by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
