{"id":25517,"date":"2024-08-02T03:14:56","date_gmt":"2024-08-01T21:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25517"},"modified":"2025-04-07T18:32:25","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T13:02:25","slug":"schistura-sonarengaensis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/schistura-sonarengaensis\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Schistura sonarengaensis?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Schistura sonarengaensis:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>new species of loach<\/strong> recently discovered.\n<ul>\n<li>Loach is a <strong>freshwater bottom-dwelling fish<\/strong> and found across rivers in Southeast Asia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The new species is described <strong>from three cave-dwelling populations<\/strong> (<strong>Barak-Surma-Meghna drainage<\/strong>) in the <strong>South Garo Hills<\/strong> district of Meghalaya.<\/li>\n<li>Features:\n<ul>\n<li>The species is <strong>distinguished by itsprominent eyes<\/strong> and 13-26 <strong>vertically elongated tocircular black blotches<\/strong> on a grayish-black mid-lateral stripe, over a dull white or pale-beige body.<\/li>\n<li>Despite <strong>lacking the typical adaptations for subterranean life<\/strong>, <strong>such as complete loss ofeyesor pigmentatio<\/strong>n, this species <strong>shows reduced pigmentation<\/strong> compared to surface-dwelling relatives.<\/li>\n<li>While these cave-dwelling fish are <strong>somewhat pale,<\/strong> they are <strong>not blind like other cavespecies<\/strong> found in Jaintia and Khasi Hills.<\/li>\n<li>The new species retains prominent eyes and is distinct from other Schistura species in the Barak-Surma-Meghna and adjacent river drainages of northeast India, except for Schistura syngkai.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What are Blotches?<\/h3>\n<p>Blotches are irregular spots or patches on a surface, often differing in color or texture from the surrounding area.
