{"id":25541,"date":"2024-08-02T09:56:19","date_gmt":"2024-08-02T04:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25541"},"modified":"2025-04-07T18:42:53","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T13:12:53","slug":"axis-of-resistance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/axis-of-resistance\/","title":{"rendered":"Axis of resistance"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Axis of resistance:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a coalition of\u00a0<strong>Iranian-backed groups.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The coalition\u2019s name is said to be inspired by former US President George W Bush\u2019s use of the term \u2018axis of evil\u2019 \u2014 referring to\u00a0<strong>Iran, Iraq and North Korea.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Formation<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The roots of the \u2018axis of resistance\u2019 go back to the\u00a0<strong>Iranian Revolution of 1979<\/strong>, which paved the way for radical Shia Muslim clerics to come to power.<\/li>\n<li>To expand its political and\u00a0<strong>military influence<\/strong>\u00a0in a region where most powers \u2014 such as US-ally Saudi Arabia \u2014 are\u00a0<strong>Sunni-majority nations<\/strong>, Iran\u2019s new regime began to support non-state actors.<\/li>\n<li>Another reason for this was to deter threats from Israel and the US \u2014 Iran has seen Israel\u2019s creation in 1948 as a means for the US (and the West) to influence the region for its strategic interests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Group members<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hezbollah\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; Shiite militant organization<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hamas<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Palestinian Sunni militant group in\u00a0<strong>Gaza<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Palestinian Islamic Jihad<\/strong>\u00a0(PIJ) &#8211; Sunni Islamist militant group,\u00a0<strong>Palestine<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Houthis\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; Zaydi Shia militant group,\u00a0<strong>Yemen<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Hamas?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a Palestinian Islamist organisation, currently governs the Gaza Strip. It took control in 2007after it won elections there the year before.
