{"id":25561,"date":"2026-03-13T12:38:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T07:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25561"},"modified":"2026-03-14T16:15:38","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T10:45:38","slug":"about-beas-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/about-beas-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Beas River"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Beas River Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four people drowned in the Beas River in the Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, recently. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Beas River<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a river passing through the northern Indian states of <\/span><b>Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>one of the five rivers that give Punjab<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cFive Rivers\u201d)<\/span><b> its name.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>known as Vipas in the past,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meaning the \u201c<\/span><b>Unfettered\u201d river.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Beas River was the <\/span><b>approximate eastern limit of Alexander the Great\u2019s invasion of India <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 326 BCE.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Course<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river <\/span><b>originates <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the <\/span><b>Rohtang Pass <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the Himalayas in central <\/span><b>Himachal Pradesh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at a height of 13,050 feet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From there it <\/span><b>flows south through the Kullu Valley,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> receiving tributaries from the flanking mountains, and then turns west to flow past Mandi <\/span><b>into the Kangra Valley.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After crossing the valley, the Beas<\/span><b> enters Punjab<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> state and veers south and then southwest to its <\/span><b>confluence with the Sutlej River at Harike.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The total length of the river is <\/span><b>470 km.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Beas <\/span><b>catchment is under the influence of western disturbances that bring snowfall <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the<\/span><b> upper sub-catchment during winter,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the<\/span><b> monsoon provides around 70% <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the<\/span><b> annual rainfall <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during June \u2013 September.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Major Tributaries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><b> Bain, Banganga, Luni, and Uhal,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along with <\/span><b>Banner, Chakki, Gaj, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harla, Mamuni, Parvati, Patlikuhlal, Sainj, Suketi, and Tirthan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Dams<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The <\/span><b>Pong Dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as the Beas Dam, is an earth-fill embankment dam constructed on the river Beas in the Kangra district of <\/span><b>Himachal Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/thenewsmill.com\/2026\/03\/four-drown-in-beas-river-in-himachal-three-rescued-search-continues-for-fourth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NEWSM<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beas River is a river passing through the northern Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
