


{"id":25628,"date":"2025-11-08T12:33:19","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T07:03:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25628"},"modified":"2025-11-10T15:50:33","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T10:20:33","slug":"methylocucumis-oryzae","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/methylocucumis-oryzae\/","title":{"rendered":"Methylocucumis oryzae"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Methylocucumis oryzae:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It <strong>is a bacterium<\/strong> which <strong>exists in nature in abundance<\/strong> in <strong>wetlands<\/strong> and rice fields.<\/li>\n<li>It had a characteristic <strong>oval and elongated shape<\/strong>, similar to that of a cucumber, and hence the name \u2018<strong>methane eating cucumbers\u2019<\/strong> was given to this novel genus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is found to be <strong>important methanotroph components<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It has a remarkably <strong>large size <\/strong>compared to other bacteria and is equal to the size of a small yeast (3-6 \u00b5m).<\/li>\n<li>Another unique feature of this bacterium is that it has a <strong>strict mesophilic nature<\/strong> and <strong>cannot grow above 37\u00baC<\/strong> while most of the other methanotrophs can tolerate or grow at 37\u00baC or even at 40\u00baC.<\/li>\n<li>The bacterium forms <strong>light pale pink colored colonies<\/strong>, and the genome is indicative of a carotenoid pathway.<\/li>\n<li>In recent years, this methanotroph was also found to <strong>promote the growth of rice plants<\/strong> by inducing early flowering and increased grain yield.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The current constraints with Methylocucumis are <strong>slow growth<\/strong> which limits growing this culture on a larger scale, needed for mitigation and biotechnological applications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are methanotrophs?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Methanotrophs or <strong>methane oxidizing <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/bacteria\/\" target=\"_blank\">bacteria<\/a> oxidize this methane and build up their biomass, breathing oxygen and producing CO2 and H2O as we do.<\/li>\n<li>These are natural methane mitigating agents and are present in all the environments where methane and oxygen both are available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat: Wetlands, rice fields, ponds<\/strong> and other water bodies are the habitats where these grow in abundance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Methane?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a colorless odorless gas, flammable water insoluble gas. It is also known as marsh gas or methyl hydride.It is easily ignited. The vapors are lighter than air.
