Founded in 1968, it is based on the ideals of <\/span><b>peace, human unity, sustainable living and spiritual growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over the years, Auroville has developed into a green and diverse community that continues to explore new ways of living and working together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Auroville History, Vision and Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Foundation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Auroville was founded on <\/span><b>28 February 1968<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>Mirra Alfassa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, popularly known as <\/span><b>the Mother<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the spiritual collaborator of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/sri-aurobindo-ghosh\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Sri Aurobindo Ghosh<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Idea and Purpose:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The idea of Auroville came from the Mother\u2019s vision of creating a place where people from different countries could live together in <\/span><b>peace, harmony and human unity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inauguration:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Auroville was inaugurated in <\/span><b>1968<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the presence of representatives from <\/span><b>124 countries and all the states of India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Soil brought from different countries was placed in a lotus-shaped urn during the ceremony.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Universal Township:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Auroville is planned as a <\/span><b>universal township<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can eventually accommodate up to <\/span><b>50,000 people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from across the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Auroville Charter:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Mother gave Auroville its <\/span><b>four-point Charter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the time of its inauguration. It highlights human unity, continuous education, progress, and research into human consciousness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Human Unity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The main purpose of Auroville is to realise <\/span><b>human unity in diversity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Its residents, known as Aurovilleans, come from different countries, cultures, age groups and social backgrounds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Development:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Auroville has transformed a largely barren landscape into a <\/span><b>3,000-acre green township and bioregion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with millions of trees, rich biodiversity, schools and social enterprises.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Auroville Location, Architecture and Key Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Auroville is located mainly in <\/span><b>Tamil Nadu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, near <\/span><b>Puducherry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and is about <\/span><b>150 km from Chennai<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It extends across areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Architectural Design:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The township was designed by renowned architect <\/span><b>Roger Anger<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, based on the vision of creating a city focused on <\/span><b>human unity, sustainable living and collective development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Matrimandir:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> At the centre of Auroville stands the <\/span><b>Matrimandir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a large golden spherical structure known as the <\/span><b>\u201csoul of the city.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is designed as a place for silent concentration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Four Zones:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The planned city is divided into four major zones: <\/span><b>Industrial, Cultural, Residential and International<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Each zone focuses on a different aspect of community life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Green Belt:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A <\/span><b>Green Belt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> surrounds the township and includes forests, farms and natural areas. Afforestation and environmental restoration have helped improve the region\u2019s biodiversity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sustainable Living:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Auroville promotes <\/span><b>sustainable living<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through renewable energy, organic farming, ecological restoration, alternative technologies and community-based enterprises.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Population:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Auroville has around <\/span><b>2,500-3,000 residents<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from approximately <\/span><b>50-60 countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, representing diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Community Life:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Auroville encourages people to see <\/span><b>work as a form of service and self-development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while education focuses on continuous learning rather than only examinations, certificates or employment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Auroville UNESCO Recognition and Cultural Importance<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/united-nations-educational-scientific-and-cultural-organization-unesco\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>UNESCO<\/b><\/a><b> Recognition:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Auroville received international recognition through <\/span><b>UNESCO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which adopted resolutions supporting and encouraging the Auroville project in <\/span><b>1966, 1968, 1970 and 1983<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>1966 Resolution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In <\/span><b>1966<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, UNESCO passed a unanimous resolution recognising Auroville as a project of importance to the future of humanity <\/span><b>Government of India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supported the development of Auroville as an experiment in international community living and the promotion of human
