{"id":25760,"date":"2024-08-12T07:49:02","date_gmt":"2024-08-12T02:19:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25760"},"modified":"2025-10-08T12:10:33","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T06:40:33","slug":"smithophis-mizoramensis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/smithophis-mizoramensis\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Smithophis mizoramensis?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Smithophis mizoramensis:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>new species of snake<\/strong> identified <strong>from Mizoram<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is named Smithophis mizoramensis after its place of discovery.<\/li>\n<li>The new species is also given a <strong>Mizo name \u201cTuithiangrul\u201d or \u201cMizo Brook Snake.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This discovery <strong>brings<\/strong> the <strong>total number of known Smithophis species<\/strong> worldwide <strong>to five.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Two other species from<\/strong> this <strong>genus<\/strong>, <strong>Smithophis atemporalis<\/strong> and <strong>Smithophis bicolor,<\/strong> were <strong>previously recorded in Mizoram.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The newly identified snake has been under study for 15 years due to its close resemblance to related species.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Genetic analysis reveals a 10-14% <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/dna\/\" target=\"_blank\">DNA<\/a> difference from its nearest relatives.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The snake also exhibits <strong>unique colouration and scale patterns.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It inhabits both <strong>lowland and highland areas of Mizoram<\/strong>, particularly <strong>near rivers<\/strong> and their surroundings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is Genetics?<\/h3>\n<p>Genetics is the study of genes.
