It entered into force in July 1975.<\/li>\n<li>It aims to ensure that<strong> international trade in specimens<\/strong> of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of the species.<\/li>\n<li>Although CITES is legally binding on the Parties \u2013 in other words they have to implement the Convention \u2013 it does <strong>not take the place of national laws.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong>CITES Secretariat is administered by UNEP<\/strong> and is located in Geneva, Switzerland.
