


{"id":25780,"date":"2024-10-01T06:52:13","date_gmt":"2024-10-01T01:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25780"},"modified":"2025-10-06T12:24:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T06:54:17","slug":"unescos-intergovernmental-oceanographic-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/unescos-intergovernmental-oceanographic-commission\/","title":{"rendered":"UNESCO\u2019s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About UNESCO\u2019s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It promotes <strong>international cooperation in marine sciences<\/strong> to improve management of the ocean, coasts and marine resources.<\/li>\n<li>The IOC enables its <strong>150 Member States<\/strong>, and <strong>India<\/strong> has been a member of this commission since 1946.<\/li>\n<li>It works together by coordinating programmes in capacity development, ocean observations and services, ocean science, tsunami warning and ocean literacy.<\/li>\n<li>The IOC is in charge of <strong>coordinating the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science<\/strong> for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, <strong>the \u201cOcean Decade\u201d.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key facts about the underwater structures<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are <strong>now seven structures<\/strong> in the Indian Ocean named <strong>mainly after Indian scientists<\/strong> or bear names proposed by India in this region of the Indian Ocean.<\/li>\n<li>All the three recently named structures were discovered by oceanographers from <strong>the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-centre-for-polar-and-oceanic-research-ncpor\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR)<\/a><strong>, Goa.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These are located along the <strong>Southwest Indian Ridge area<\/strong> of the Indian Ocean and were discovered during an international survey exploration programme.<\/li>\n<li>Since 2004, India has been undertaking the <strong>Indian Southern Ocean Research Programme<\/strong> with NCPOR being the nodal agency.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Previously named structures are\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Raman ridge<\/strong> (accepted in 1992): It was discovered in 1951 by a US oil vessel. It was named after Physicist and Nobel Laureate Sir CV Raman.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Panikkar Seamount<\/strong> (accepted in 1993): It was discovered by India research vessel Sagar Kanya. It is named after NK Panikkar, a renowned oceanographer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sagar Kanya ridge (<\/strong>accepted in 1991): A seamount was named after the research vessel itself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DN Wadia Guyot:<\/strong> It was named after a geologist DN Wadia when an underwater volcanic mountain, known as guyot, was discovered in 1992 by Sagar Kanya.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Recently two structures were named after the rulers of the <strong>Mauryan dynasty<\/strong> namely <strong>Ashoka seamount<\/strong> and the <strong>Chandragupt ridge<\/strong> and one more was named as <strong>Kalpataru ridge<\/strong> in the Indian Ocean.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the International Hydrographic Organisation?<\/h3>\n<p>International Hydrographic Organisation is an intergovernmental organization that works to ensure all the world&#8217;s seas, oceans and navigable waters are surveyed and charted.
