Those <strong>at particular risk include puppies<\/strong> younger than four months <strong>and dogs that have not been vaccinated<\/strong> against CDV.<\/li>\n<li>In addition to dogs, CDV <strong>can infect ferrets as well as<\/strong> a wide range of <strong>other mammals,<\/strong> especially carnivores.\n<ul>\n<li>These include several wildlife species such as <strong>wild canines<\/strong> (e.g., foxes and wolves), <strong>raccoons, and skunks<\/strong>. <strong>Cats also may become infected<\/strong> but are <strong>unlikely to get sick.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transmission<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It is spread through <strong>direct contact or airborne exposure.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>virus does not last long in the environment<\/strong> and can be destroyed by most disinfectants.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>However, the distemper-<strong>infected dogs<\/strong> can <strong>shed the virus for<\/strong> up to <strong>several months,<\/strong> putting dogs around them at risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Once a dog is infected, the virus quickly <strong>spreads throughout the entire body<\/strong> and significantly <strong>weakens the immune system,<\/strong> leaving them <strong>susceptible to secondary infections.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The skin, respiratory, gastrointestinal (GI), and central nervous systems can all be affected.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coughing<\/strong> is the most <strong>common symptom.<\/strong> They usually develop <strong>fever<\/strong> and <strong>discharge from the eyes<\/strong> and\/or nose.<\/li>\n<li>The disease can also cause <strong>disorientation, tremors, twitches,<\/strong> and seizures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>There is <strong>no cure<\/strong>, and <strong>no antiviral drugs<\/strong> have been approved to combat the infection.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>best way<\/strong> to prevent canine distemper <strong>is through vaccination.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is a Virus?<\/h3>\n<p>A virus is an infectious microbe consisting of a segment of nucleic acid (either DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protein coat.
