It is Bangladesh\u2019s\u00a0<strong>only coral island<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 there are reefs from 10-15 km to the west-northwest \u2014 and is also a breeding ground for sea turtles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What is the history of the island?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The island was\u00a0<strong>once part of the Teknaf peninsula<\/strong>\u00a0(around 5,000 years ago) but gradually got submerged into the sea.<\/li>\n<li>Around 450 years ago, the southern suburbs of present-day St Martin\u2019s Island resurfaced \u2014 the northern and rest of the parts of the island rose above sea level in the following 100 years.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Arab merchants\u00a0<\/strong>were among the\u00a0<strong>first ones to settle<\/strong>\u00a0on the island. They began to arrive there in the 18th Century.<\/li>\n<li>The merchants initially named the\u00a0<strong>island \u201cJazira<\/strong>\u201d (meaning \u201cthe island\u201d or \u201cthe peninsula\u201d) and later changed it to \u201cNarikel Jinjira\u201d or \u201cCoconut Island\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>In 1900, British India annexed the island during a land survey.
