


{"id":25859,"date":"2024-08-16T04:29:49","date_gmt":"2024-08-15T22:59:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=25859"},"modified":"2025-04-07T21:43:26","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T16:13:26","slug":"geneva-conventions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/geneva-conventions\/","title":{"rendered":"Geneva Conventions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Geneva Conventions:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>They are a <strong>set of four treaties<\/strong> which include more than 400 articles, setting out detailed rules for the <strong>treatment of prisoners, protecting hospitals and medical staff, allowing humanitarian aid<\/strong> and prohibiting torture, rape and sexual violence.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>formalised in 1949 by the United Nations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There are <strong>three additional protocols<\/strong>, the first two of which were <strong>formalised in 1977 and the third in 2005.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The focus of the Conventions is the <strong>treatment of non-combatants and prisoners of war <\/strong>and not the use of conventional or biological and chemical weapons, the use of which is governed respectively by The Hague Conventions and the Geneva Protocol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>List of conventions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The First Geneva Convention:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It protects <strong>wounded and sick soldiers on land <\/strong>during war.<\/li>\n<li>It is also applicable on medical and religious personnel, medical units and medical transports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Second Geneva Convention:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It protects <strong>wounded, sick and shipwrecked military personnel at sea during war.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This Convention replaced the Hague Convention of 1907 for the Adaptation to Maritime Warfare of the Principles of the Geneva Convention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Third Geneva Convention<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It applies to <strong>prisoners of war.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Convention establishes the principle that prisoners of war shall be released and repatriated without delay after the cessation of active hostilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Fourth Geneva Convention<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It protects <strong>civilians, including those in occupied territory.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It contains a short section concerning the general protection of populations against certain consequences of war, without addressing the conduct of hostilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the United Nations Organisation?<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/quest-upsc-notes\/the-united-nations-un\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>United Nations (UN)<\/strong><\/a> is an intergovernmental organization that was established with the purpose of promoting international cooperation and maintaining peace and security among its member states.
