They live in <strong>Gujrat, karnataka and Andhra Pradesh besides Maharashtra<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Dhangar community is on the <strong>Vimukta Jati and Nomadic Tribes (VJNT) list in Maharashtra.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They <strong>live a largely isolated life <\/strong>and wander <strong>mainly in forests, hills and mountains.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Households and Population:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Dhangar households are <strong>typically small, close-knit units, where family plays a central role.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The community is estimated to have a population of <strong>around 1 crore<\/strong>, which is about 9% of Maharashtra&#8217;s total population.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clusters and Sub-Castes:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Within the Dhangar tribe, there are <strong>around 20 sub-castes and cluster<\/strong>s, each with its own distinct customs and traditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Occupation:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They are relying on <strong>their sheep and goat<\/strong> herding practices as a primary means of livelihood.<\/li>\n<li>They practice both <strong>nomadic pastoral and semi-nomadic and agrarian lifestyles in rural areas.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Seasonal Migration<\/strong>: With the end of the bajra harvesting season <strong>in October,<\/strong> the Dhangar tribe starts <strong>their annual migration in search of greener pastures for their cattle.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Culture:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They practice a variety of customs and rituals in this journey, like-the <strong>Worship of their ancestors.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The tradition of <strong>singing songs, especially during the night<\/strong>, is a significant aspect of Dhangar culture and serves multiple purposes.<\/li>\n<li>They use these songs called <strong>sumbaran- an oral tradition of Dhangars<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Dhangar community is a prominent pastoral and agricultural group in India, known for their traditional sheep herding practices and vibrant cultural heritage.
