{"id":26067,"date":"2024-08-26T06:51:28","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T01:21:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=26067"},"modified":"2025-04-07T23:24:58","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T17:54:58","slug":"mass-wasting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mass-wasting\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Mass Wasting?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Mass Wasting:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>movement of rock and soil down slope<\/strong> under the <strong>influence of gravity.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Causes<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Mass wasting occurs <strong>when a slope is too steep to remain stable<\/strong> with existing material and conditions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Slope stability<\/strong> is <strong>determined by <\/strong>two factors: the <strong>angle of the slope<\/strong> and the shear <strong>strength of <\/strong>the <strong>accumulated materials.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Mass-wasting events are <strong>triggered by changes that over steepen slope angles<\/strong> and <strong>weaken slope stability<\/strong>, such as rapid snow melt, intense rainfall, earthquake shaking, volcanic eruptions, storm waves, stream erosion, and human activities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Excessive precipitation<\/strong> is the most<strong> common trigger.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Mass-wasting events are <strong>classified by their type of movement and material<\/strong>, and they share common morphological surface features.<\/li>\n<li>The most <strong>common types<\/strong> of mass-wasting events are <strong>rockfalls, slides, flows, and creep.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Geologically, <strong>landslide is a general term for mass wasting<\/strong> that involves fast-moving geologic material.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Loose material along with overlying soils<\/strong> are what <strong>typically move<\/strong> during a mass-wasting event.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moving blocks of bedrock<\/strong> are <strong>called rock topples, rock slides, or rock falls<\/strong>, depending on the dominant motion of the blocks.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Movements of dominantly liquid material<\/strong> are <strong>called flows.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Movement by mass wasting <strong>can be slow or rapid. Rapid movement<\/strong> can be <strong>dangerous<\/strong>, <strong>such as<\/strong> during <strong>debris flows.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is Debris flow?<\/h3>\n<p>Debris flows are fast-moving landslides that are particularly dangerous to life and property because they move quickly, destroy objects in their paths, and often strike without warning. Debris flows generally occur during periods of intense rainfall or rapid snowmelt and usually start on hillsides or mountains.
