Other common symptoms include <strong>vomiting<\/strong>, <strong>diarrhoea<\/strong>, and in severe cases, <strong>respiratory failure<\/strong> with <strong>nasal bleeding<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>AES can be caused by a variety of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/fungi\/\" target=\"_blank\">fungi<\/a>, and parasites, as well as toxins and chemicals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diagnosis challenges:<\/strong> The diagnosis of AES can be challenging due to the similarity of symptoms with other viral infections like <strong>Chandipura Vesiculovirus (CHPV)<\/strong>, <strong>Enterovirus<\/strong>, <strong>Meningitis<\/strong>, and <strong>Japanese Encephalitis<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Specifics of the Gujarat outbreak:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Spread across regions:<\/strong> The outbreak spread over <strong>26 of the 33 districts<\/strong> in Gujarat, affecting both rural and urban areas.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Six major cities<\/strong> in the state reported cases, with some patients from neighbouring states like <strong>Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra<\/strong> also admitted to Gujarat hospitals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Patient zero:<\/strong> The first confirmed case in Gujarat was a <strong>four-year-old girl<\/strong> from Aravalli district, who unfortunately passed away before her CHPV diagnosis was confirmed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fatalities and caseload:<\/strong> As of <strong>August 19, 2024<\/strong>, the AES caseload in Gujarat stood at <strong>178 cases<\/strong>, with <strong>78 deaths<\/strong>. Among the deceased, <strong>28 children (36%)<\/strong> tested positive for CHPV, highlighting the complexity of the outbreak.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Chandipura Virus Infection?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a virus of the Rhabdoviridae family, which also includes other members such as the lyssavirus that causes rabies.
