


{"id":26181,"date":"2025-03-07T12:31:03","date_gmt":"2025-03-07T07:01:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=26181"},"modified":"2025-04-08T00:15:33","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T18:45:33","slug":"d-voter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/d-voter\/","title":{"rendered":"D-Voter"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>D-Voter Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>Assam&#8217;s opposition recently raised concerns over the plight of \u2018D\u2019 (Doubtful) voters in Assam, demanding the closure of the state\u2019s only detention centre, now termed a transit camp, and the tabling of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) report in the Assembly.<\/p>\n<h2>About D-Voter<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>D-voters or <strong>doubtful voters,<\/strong> are a category of <strong>voters in Assam <\/strong>who <strong>couldn&#8217;t give evidence to prove their Indian nationality<\/strong> and whose c<strong>ases are pending with <\/strong>the <strong>Foreigners Tribunals or <\/strong>who have been <strong>declared foreigners by the Tribunal.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The D-voter category was introduced by the Election Commission of India in 1997.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Because their Indian citizenship has not been verified, doubtful voters are <strong>not allowed to vote in elections.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are also <strong>not permitted to run for office<\/strong> in the nation&#8217;s elections.<\/li>\n<li>However, \u2018doubtful voter\u2019 or \u2018doubtful citizenship\u2019 have <strong>not been defined in<\/strong> the <strong>Citizenship Act, 1955, or the Citizenship Rules of 2003.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Citizenship Rules, 2003,<\/strong> was framed under the provisions of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2003.\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>rules framed in 2003<\/strong> <strong>list out the steps to be followed fo<\/strong>r the <strong>preparation of the <\/strong>National Population Register (<strong>NPR<\/strong>) <strong>and <\/strong>the National Register of Indian Citizens (<strong>NRIC)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It has <strong>only been stated that <\/strong>the <strong>Local Registrar will include the details of individuals whose citizenship is in doubt<\/strong> with an &#8220;<strong>appropriate remark <\/strong>in the population register <strong>for further enquiry&#8221; <\/strong>under subsection 4 of section 4, which deals with the production of the National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC).<\/li>\n<li><strong>A family or individual is notifiedin a specific pro forma<\/strong> as soon as the verification process concludes, whether they have been classified as a dubious citizen (D-Category).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Before deciding<\/strong> whether or not to add their name to the register, <strong>they are also given the opportunity to be heard by the Taluk or Sub-district Registrar of Citizenship.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Registrar has ninety days <\/strong>to complete and justify his findings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>marking as a doubtful voter<\/strong> is a temporary measure and<strong> cannot be prolonged.<\/strong> Within a specific timeframe, a decision needs to be made.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>According to the documentation provided, if it is determined that the individual is a foreign national or an illegal immigrant, they may be deported or placed in a detention centre.<\/li>\n<li><strong>D- Voters can also apply to have their names added to the NRC.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They will be <strong>included only after<\/strong> they get <strong>clearance from the Foreigners Tribuna<\/strong>ls <strong>and<\/strong> their <strong>names<\/strong> are <strong>removed from electoral rolls under<\/strong> the <strong>\u2018D\u2019 category.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>D-Voter FAQs<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Q1<\/strong>.
