{"id":26424,"date":"2024-09-08T01:44:41","date_gmt":"2024-09-07T20:14:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=26424"},"modified":"2025-04-08T02:02:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T20:32:09","slug":"galathea-bay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/galathea-bay\/","title":{"rendered":"Galathea Bay"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Galathea Bay:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> It is located in the <strong>Great Nicobar Island<\/strong> of Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India.<\/li>\n<li>It is being developed as an <strong>International Container Transshipment Port<\/strong> (ICTP).<\/li>\n<li>It is also eligible for central funding and will be developed under the <strong>public-private partnership model.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The proposed facility is envisaged to be developed in four phases with Phase 1 is proposed to be commissioned in the year 2028 with handling capacity of ~ 4 Million TEUs, increasing to 16 Million TEUs in the ultimate stage of development by 2058.<\/li>\n<li>Once operational, the Galathea Bay project will help capture a large share of transshipped cargo which is handled at ports outside India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Significance of this project<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The project focuses on three key drivers, which can result in making it a leading container transshipment port, i.e.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Strategic location<\/strong> in terms of proximity (40 nautical miles) with the International shipping trade route<\/li>\n<li><strong>Availability of natural water depth<\/strong> of over 20m and carrying capacity of transshipment cargo from all the Ports in the proximity including Indian Ports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Ports in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>India currently has <strong>12 operational Major Ports<\/strong> controlled by the central government and another 200 non-major ones <strong>governed by the states.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Major Port Authorities Act, 2021<\/strong> provides for regulation, operation and planning of Major Ports in India and vests the administration, control and management of such ports upon the Boards of Major Port Authorities.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is a bay?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a body of water partially surrounded by land. A bay is usually smaller and less enclosed than a gulf.
