{"id":26451,"date":"2025-10-27T12:00:36","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T06:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=26451"},"modified":"2025-10-29T12:15:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T06:45:09","slug":"teal-carbon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/teal-carbon\/","title":{"rendered":"Teal Carbon"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Teal Carbon:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It refers to <strong>carbon stored in non-tidal fresh water wetlands,<\/strong> encompassing carbon sequestered in vegetation, microbial biomass, and dissolved and particulate organic matter.<\/li>\n<li>These ecosystems are considered to be <strong>more effective at carbon capture and storage<\/strong> than terrestrial forest ecosystems, and can store and sequester more carbon than any other type of terrestrial ecosystem.<\/li>\n<li>The concept of teal carbon is a recent addition to the environmental science pertaining to organic carbon in inland fresh wetlands.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>colour-based terminology that reflects<\/strong> the <strong>classification<\/strong> of the organic carbon based on its <strong>functions and location<\/strong> rather than its physical properties.<\/li>\n<li>At the global level, the storage of teal carbon across the ecosystems is estimated to be <strong>500.21 petagrams of carbon<\/strong> (PgC), which is a unit to measure carbon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Major sources of Teal carbon:<\/strong> Peatlands, freshwater swamps, and natural freshwater marshes account for a significant amount of this storage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threats:<\/strong> Though these wetlands play a crucial role in regulating greenhouse gases, they are vulnerable to degradation from pollution, land use changes, water extraction, and landscape modifications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What are Peatlands?<\/h3>\n<p>Peatlands are terrestrial wetland ecosystems in which waterlogged conditions prevent plant material from fully decomposing.
