


{"id":26502,"date":"2024-09-11T04:53:37","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T23:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=26502"},"modified":"2025-10-10T14:31:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T09:01:00","slug":"ukai-dam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ukai-dam\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukai Dam"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Ukai Dam:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Ukai Dam, constructed <strong>across the Tapti River<\/strong>, is the <strong>second largest reservoir in Gujarat after<\/strong> the <strong>Sardar Sarovar.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is also known as <strong>Vallabh Sagar.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Constructed in 1972, the dam is meant for <strong>irrigation, power generation,<\/strong> and <strong>flood control.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>storage capacity<\/strong> of Ukai dam is almost <strong>46% of the total capacity of all the other<\/strong> existing <strong>dams in Gujarat<\/strong> if put together.<\/li>\n<li>Having a catchment area of about 62,255 km2 and a water spread of about 52,000 hectares, its <strong>capacity<\/strong> is <strong>almost the same as<\/strong> that of the <strong>Bhakra Nangal Dam.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Ukai dam is an <strong>earth-cum-masonry dam<\/strong>, the embankment wall of which is almost 4,927 meters long.<\/li>\n<li>Its earth dam is 80.77 meters high, whereas the masonry dam is 68.68 meters high.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Facts about Tapti River:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is one of the <strong>major rivers in peninsular India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is one of the three major rivers (the other two being the Narmada River and Mahi River), which <strong>flows in east-to-west direction.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Course:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Origin<\/strong>: It rises in the <strong>Gawilgarh Hills<\/strong> of the <strong>central Deccan plateau<\/strong> in south-central <strong>Madhya Pradesh<\/strong> state.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>flows westward between<\/strong> two spurs of the <strong>Satpura Range<\/strong>, across the Jalgaon plateau region <strong>in Maharashtra<\/strong> state, and through the <strong>plain of Surat in Gujara<\/strong>t state <strong>to the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gulf-of-khambhat\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Gulf of Khambhat<\/strong><\/a>(an inlet of the Arabian Sea).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Total Length: 435 miles (700 km).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Its <strong>total catchment area<\/strong> is around 65145 sq. km., out of which <strong>80% lies in<\/strong> the <strong>Maharastra region.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The basin of Tapi is <strong>surrounded by the Saputara mountain range<\/strong> in the north, the <strong>Ajanta and Satmala mountain ranges<\/strong> in the south, and the <strong>Mahadeva mountain<\/strong> range in the east.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Tapti flows roughly<strong> parallel to the<\/strong> longer <strong>Narmada River<\/strong> to the north, from which it is <strong>separated by<\/strong> the main part of the <strong>Satpura Range.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The two river valleys and the intervening range form the natural barrier between northern and peninsular India.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Major Tributaries<\/strong>: The important tributaries of the river are <strong>Purna<\/strong> River, <strong>Girna<\/strong> River, <strong>Panzara<\/strong> River, Waghur River, Bori River, and Aner River.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is an earthen dam?<\/h3>\n<p>Earthen dams are constructed using natural materials such as soil, clay, and rock.
