equator<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They make up <strong>six percent of Earth\u2019sland<\/strong> surface area.<\/li>\n<li>They have a <strong>dense upper canopy of broad-leafed trees.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These forests are known for supporting a wide variety of plant and animal life and have <strong>nutrient-poor soils with rapid decomposition.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>More than 50 percent of<\/strong> land-based <strong>plant and animal species<\/strong> on Earth can be found in tropical forests.<\/li>\n<li>They encompass both tropical deciduous forests and tropical rainforests.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tropical rainforests<\/strong> occur in regions of the tropics where <strong>temperatures<\/strong> are <strong>always high<\/strong> and where <strong>rainfall exceeds<\/strong> about <strong>1,800 to 2,500 mm<\/strong> (about 70 to 100 inches) annually and <strong>occurs fairly evenly throughout the year.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Similar hot climates<\/strong> in which annual rainfall lies between about 800 and 1,800 mm and in which a <strong>pronounced season of low rainfall<\/strong> occurs typically <strong>support tropical deciduous forests.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>nations with<\/strong> the <strong>most tropical forest<\/strong> area are <strong>Brazil, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, <\/strong>Indonesia, Peru, and Columbia, in that order.\n<ul>\n<li>Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Gabon, the Republic of Congo, Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, India, Suriname, Venezuela, and Mexico also have vast areas of rainforest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brazil<\/strong> is home to about a <strong>third of the planet\u2019s remaining tropical rainforests<\/strong>, including two-thirds of the <strong>Amazon rainforest<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Tropical forests play a critical part in the planet\u2019s water cycle and are <strong>crucial carbon sinks<\/strong>, <strong>storing about<\/strong> a <strong>quarter of all terrestrial carbon on Earth.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr
