This is called a <strong>screening mammogram<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Providers also use mammography to look for any abnormalities if you develop a new symptom, such as a lump, pain, nipple discharge, or breast skin changes. This is called a <strong>diagnostic mammogram.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How does it work?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>During a mammogram, a patient\u2019s breast is placed on a flat support plate and compressed with a parallel plate called a paddle.<\/li>\n<li>An x-ray machine produces a small burst of <strong>x-rays<\/strong> that <strong>pass through the breast to a detector<\/strong> located on the opposite side.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>detector<\/strong> can be either a photographic film plate, which captures the x-ray image on film, or a solid-state detector, which <strong>transmits electronic signals to a computer to form a digital image.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>images<\/strong> produced are <strong>called mammograms.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>On a film mammogram<\/strong>, <strong>low density tissues<\/strong>, such as fat, <strong>appear translucent<\/strong> (i.e. darker shades of gray approaching the black background), whereas areas of <strong>dense tissue,<\/strong> such as connective and glandular tissue or tumors, <strong>appear whiter on a gray background.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These <strong>high-density regions could represent <\/strong>many different types of <strong>abnormalities, <\/strong>including <strong>cancerous tumors, <\/strong>non-cancerous masses called <strong>benign tumors, fibroadenomas,<\/strong> or complex cysts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What are tumors?<\/h3>\n<p>Tumors are groups of abnormal cells that form lumps or growths. They can start in any one of the trillions of cells in our bodies.
