


{"id":26684,"date":"2025-11-10T12:15:23","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T06:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=26684"},"modified":"2025-12-07T14:04:54","modified_gmt":"2025-12-07T08:34:54","slug":"national-board-for-wildlife-nbwl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-board-for-wildlife-nbwl\/","title":{"rendered":"National Board for Wildlife (NBWL)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>National Board for Wildlife Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) recently recommended 13 defence and paramilitary projects, most of them in high-altitude protected areas of Ladakh and one in Arunachal Pradesh.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About National Board for Wildlife<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>statutory body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> constituted by the Central Government in 2003 under Section 5A of the <\/span><b>Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBWL is India\u2019s<\/span><b> top-level advisory body to the government on matters pertaining to wildlife conservation, particularly within Protected Areas (PAs).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is responsible for guiding the government\u2019s decisions on matters related to wildlife conservation and<\/span><b> issuing approvals for projects in PAs.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>National Board for Wildlife <\/b><b>Organisation Structure<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>47-member<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> committee, <\/span><b>headed by the Prime Minister<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Minister of Environment,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Forest, and Climate Change as <\/span><b>vice chairperson.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to offices and institutions directly involved in conservation and protection of wildlife, the NBWL <\/span><b>also has the chief of army staff, defence secretary, expenditure secretary <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the Government of India as members.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, the <\/span><b>central government nominates 10 members <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who are <\/span><b>eminent conservationists, ecologists, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and environmentalists.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Additional Director General of Forests (WL) &amp; Director, Wildlife Preservation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the <\/span><b>Member-Secretary to the Board.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>National Board for Wildlife <\/b><b>Functions<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major function of the National Board is to <\/span><b>promote the conservation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>development of wildlife and forests.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBWL <\/span><b>advises both Central and State Governments <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the matters of promoting wildlife conservation and protection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effectively<\/span><b> controlling poaching and illegal trade of wildlif<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e and its products.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making <\/span><b>recommendations on the setting and managing national parks, sanctuaries <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and other protected areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBWL <\/span><b>carries out Environmental Impact Assessment of projects and activities on wild life <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or its habitat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Reviewing the progress <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the field of wildlife conservation in the country and suggesting measures for improvement to the Government.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Preparing and publishing a status report at least once in two years <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on wildlife in the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Standing Committee of <\/b><b>National Board for Wildlife<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an<\/span><b> independent body under NBWL.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It comprises <\/span><b>not more than 10 members of the NBWL.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Minister of Environment,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Forest, and Climate Change <\/span><b>chairs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Standing Committee.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference between the standing committee and the National Board is that the <\/span><b>Standing Committee regulates land diversion within protected areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and eco-sensitive zones, making it a <\/span><b>purely project clearance body.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>NBWL<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the other hand, has the <\/span><b>power to deal with policy-level decisions on wildlife.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/energy-and-environment\/wildlife-panel-clears-13-defence-paramilitary-projects-in-ladakh-arunachal\/article70252661.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>National Board for Wildlife is India\u2019s top-level advisory body to the government on matters pertaining to wildlife conservation, particularly within Protected Areas (PAs).
