{"id":26747,"date":"2024-09-21T01:09:38","date_gmt":"2024-09-20T19:39:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=26747"},"modified":"2025-04-08T04:26:12","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T22:56:12","slug":"blast-furnace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/blast-furnace\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Blast Furnace?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Blast Furnace:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>vertical shaft furnace<\/strong> that <strong>produces liquid metals<\/strong> by the <strong>reaction of a flow of air <\/strong>introduced under pressure into the bottom of the furnace <strong>with a mixture of metallic ore, coke<\/strong>, <strong>and flux <\/strong>fed into the top.<\/li>\n<li>The blast furnace itself is a <strong>steel shaft lined with fire resistant<\/strong>, <strong>refractory materials.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The hottest part of furnace &#8211; where the walls reach a temperature &gt;300\u00b0C &#8211; is water-cooled.<\/li>\n<li>The whole structure is<strong> supported from<\/strong> the <strong>outside by a steel frame.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Blast furnaces are <strong>used to produce pig iron from iron orefor <\/strong>subsequent<strong> processing into steel<\/strong>, and they are also employed in processing lead, copper, and other metals.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>process is continuous,<\/strong> with <strong>raw materials<\/strong> being <strong>regularly charged to the top<\/strong> of the furnace and <strong>molten metal and slag<\/strong> being <strong>tapped from the bottom<\/strong> of the furnace at regular intervals.<\/li>\n<li>Once a blast furnace is started, it will <strong>continuously run for four to ten years<\/strong> with only short stops to perform planned maintenance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rapid combustion<\/strong> is <strong>maintained by the current of air under pressure.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Blast furnaces are the <strong>largest consumers of materials and energy in<\/strong> the iron and <strong>steel-making process.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is Pig Iron?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pig iron is an intermediate product and <strong>first product of Iron making reduced from Iron ore.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Pig iron has a <strong>very high carbon content<\/strong>, typically 3.5\u20134.5%, <strong>along with<\/strong> silica, Manganese, Sulphur, Phosphorus, Titanium and <strong>other trace elements<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>obtained directly from the blast furnace<\/strong> and cast in molds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is Coke?<\/h3>\n<p>It is the solid residue remaining after certain types of bituminous coals are heated to a high temperature out of contact with air until substantially all of the volatile constituents have been driven off. The residue is chiefly carbon, with minor amounts of hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen.
