{"id":26759,"date":"2025-08-19T11:41:59","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T06:11:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=26759"},"modified":"2025-08-19T12:40:48","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T07:10:48","slug":"sustainable-aviation-fuel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sustainable-aviation-fuel\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainable Aviation Fuel"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Sustainable Aviation Fuel Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s largest refiner and fuel retailer Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) expects to start producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on a commercial scale at its Panipat refinery by December.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sustainable Aviation Fuel<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a biofuel, also <\/span><b>known as bio-jet fuel produced from sustainable feedstocks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has chemistry similar to conventional aviation turbine fuel (ATF) or jet fuel, which is derived from crude oil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that existing aircraft engines can easily use the SAF-ATF blend.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is made from <\/span><b>renewable biomass and waste resources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have the potential to deliver the performance of petroleum-based jet fuel.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various Indian airlines have already operated successfully a few test and demonstration flights using jet fuel doped with SAF in various proportions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Production:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It can be produced from a number of sources (feedstock) including waste oil and <\/span><b>fats, green and municipal waste<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and non-food crops.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also be <\/span><b>produced synthetically <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">via a process that captures carbon directly from the air.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Significance of Sustainable Aviation Fuel<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its <\/span><b>carbon footprint<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is significantly <\/span><b>lower<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than aviation turbine fuel (ATF).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is \u2018sustainable\u2019 because the <\/span><b>raw feedstock does not compete with food crops<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or water supplies, or is responsible for forest degradation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It remains the major mature and viable pathway to decarbonise the aviation sector.
