{"id":26785,"date":"2024-09-23T07:37:33","date_gmt":"2024-09-23T02:07:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=26785"},"modified":"2025-04-08T04:44:05","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T23:14:05","slug":"project-200","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/project-200\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Project 200?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Project 200:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an <strong>innovative satellite<\/strong> designed to operate at an <strong>Ultra-Low Earth Orbit (180 km-250 km).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>developed by Bellatrix Aerospace<\/strong>, a Bengaluru-based space startup.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Traditionally<\/strong>, <strong>satellites<\/strong> have been <strong>deployed in orbits<\/strong> at altitudes <strong>well above 450 km<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>This altitude choice has been influenced b<strong>y<\/strong> various considerations, such as the <strong>desire to minimise<\/strong> the <strong>impact of atmospheric interference<\/strong> on satellite operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Though it is known that a <strong>satellite\u2019s capabilities improve significantly at 200 km,limitations on propulsion technology<\/strong> have <strong>prevented satellites <\/strong>from <strong>operating at this orbit.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Project 200<\/strong> is a <strong>technology demonstration<\/strong> mission to qualify a new unconventional <strong>satellite powered by<\/strong> an <strong>innovative propulsion system<\/strong> (developed in-house) at around 200 km.\n<ul>\n<li>Bellatrix Aerospace stated that their <strong>cutting-edge propulsion technology<\/strong> enables satellites to <strong>maintain 200 km orbits for years<\/strong>, rather than deorbiting in a few days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>According to Bellatrix, <strong>at 200 km<\/strong>, a satellite\u2019s capability would improve significantly since the <strong>communication latency is reduced by half<\/strong> and <strong>image resolution is improved <\/strong>by <strong>three times.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>cost of the satellite<\/strong> is <strong>also less <\/strong>when compared to spacecraft placed in 450 km orbits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is Low Earth Orbit (LEO)?<\/h3>\n<p>Low Earth orbit (LEO) encompasses Earth-centered orbits with an altitude of 1,200 miles (2,000 km) or less.
