


{"id":26827,"date":"2024-09-24T03:50:11","date_gmt":"2024-09-23T22:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=26827"},"modified":"2025-04-08T05:02:40","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T23:32:40","slug":"fjord","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/fjord\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Fjord?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Fjord:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A fjord is a <strong>long, deep, narrow body of water<\/strong> that <strong>reaches far inland<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Fjords are often <strong>set in a U-shaped valley<\/strong> with <strong>steep walls of rock on either side<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Fjords are <strong>found mainly in Norway, Chile<\/strong>, <strong>New Zealand, Canada, Greenland<\/strong>, and the U.S. state of <strong>Alaska<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How are Fjords Formed?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Fjords have been <strong>shaped throughout<\/strong> the span of several <strong>ice ages by slow-moving glaciers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>As the <strong>glacier<\/strong> moved, it <strong>cut away<\/strong> at the<strong> top layers of ice<\/strong> and into the sediment below.<\/li>\n<li>Melting waters also carved away into the land, meaning that many f<strong>jords are actually deeper than the sea <\/strong>that feeds into it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Where the fjord meets the sea<\/strong>, also known as the <strong>mouth<\/strong>, many <strong>glaciers left behind shill or shoal rock deposits.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Because the <strong>mouth is a shallower opening than the body <\/strong>of the fjord, it <strong>results in extremely fast-moving water<\/strong> (this includes strong currents and saltwater rapids).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fjords<\/strong> commonly are <strong>deeper in their middle and upper reaches<\/strong> than at the seaward end.\n<ul>\n<li>This <strong>results from<\/strong> the <strong>greater erosive power of<\/strong> the <strong>glaciers closer to their source,<\/strong> where they are moving most actively and vigorously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Because of the comparatively shallow thresholds of fjords, the bottoms of many have stagnant water and are rich in black mud containing hydrogen sulfide.<\/li>\n<li>Some <strong>features<\/strong> of fjords <strong>include coral reefs<\/strong> and <strong>rocky islands called skerries.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Epishelf Lakes:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Another feature of some fjords is the presence of epishelf lakes. These lakes occur when <strong>melted fresh water becomes trapped under a floating ice shelf<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This <strong>freshwater does not mix with the saltwater below<\/strong>, but rather <strong>floats on top<\/strong> of it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is a Glacier?<\/h3>\n<p>Glaciers are massive bodies of slowly moving ice. Glaciers form on land, and they are made up of fallen snow that gets compressed into ice over many centuries.
