


{"id":26835,"date":"2024-09-25T01:44:42","date_gmt":"2024-09-24T20:14:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=26835"},"modified":"2025-04-08T05:06:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T23:36:13","slug":"ghost-sharks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ghost-sharks\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Ghost Sharks?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Ghost Sharks:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Ghost sharks, also known as <strong>chimaeras and spookfish<\/strong>, are a group of <strong>cartilaginous fish<\/strong> closely <strong>related to sharks <\/strong>and rays.<\/li>\n<li>They genetically diverged from their shark relatives nearly 400 million years ago.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They have <strong>long, tapering bodies<\/strong> and incredibly <strong>large heads.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The ghost shark\u2019s maximum observed length is about 49 inches, but scientists believe they can grow to be more than six feet in some cases.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Their skin ranges in color from black to pale blue to brownish grey.<\/li>\n<li>They have <strong>haunting black eyes<\/strong> and <strong>smooth<\/strong>, light brown, <strong>scale-free skin<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Their <strong>eyes<\/strong> are backed with <strong>a reflective tissue layer<\/strong> that makes them <strong>seem toglow in the dark<\/strong>, contributing to an eerie\u2014even <strong>ghostlike\u2014appearance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They <strong>live at depths<\/strong> ranging from 200 meters to <strong>2,600 meters<\/strong> and generally stay <strong>close to the seafloor.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Their diet primarily consists of shellfish, mollusks, and worms that live on or under the seafloor.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They are sometimes referred to as the <strong>ocean\u2019s butterflies<\/strong> for the way they <strong>glide through the water with their large pectoral fins.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Ghost sharks are thought to be <strong>solitary animals,<\/strong> as they are generally observed alone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What are Sharks?<\/h3>\n<p>Sharks are fishes and most have the typical fusiform body shape. Like other fishes, sharks are ectothermic (cold-blooded), live in water, have fins, and breathe with gills. However, sharks differ from Osteichthyes fish. One difference is that a shark&#8217;s skeleton is made of cartilage instead of bone.
