{"id":26980,"date":"2024-10-01T03:49:50","date_gmt":"2024-09-30T22:19:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=26980"},"modified":"2025-10-07T15:37:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T10:07:06","slug":"tsetse-flies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tsetse-flies\/","title":{"rendered":"Tsetse flies"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Tsetse flies:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Tsetse flies (genus Glossina) are unicellular <strong>blood-sucking insects.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>holometaboulos insects<\/strong>, females giving birth to full-grown larvae which rapidly pupate in the soil.<\/li>\n<li>They are arranged taxonomically and ecologically into three groups: <strong>the fusca, or forest<\/strong>, group (subgenus Austenina); the morsitans, or <strong>savanna, group<\/strong> (subgenus Glossina); and the palpalis, or <strong>riverine, group<\/strong> (subgenus Nemorhina).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They are found in local patches of dense vegetation along <strong>banks of rivers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Also found in lakes in arid terrain, and also in dense, wet, heavily forested equatorial rainforest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>They feed on blood and <strong>transmit the Trypanosoma parasites,<\/strong> which are responsible for sleeping sickness in humans and animal trypanosomosis or &#8220;<strong>Nagana&#8221; in cattle.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are also linked to <strong>nagana in African livestock,<\/strong> resulting in annual agricultural losses estimated in the billions of dollars.<\/li>\n<li>The collected data confirmed the presence of Glossina species in 34 countries, ranging from Northern Senegal (around 15 degrees north) to South Africa (Kwazulu-Natal province at 28.5 degrees south).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT)?<\/h3>\n<p>Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) is also known as sleeping sickness.
