{"id":2700,"date":"2025-01-02T11:11:25","date_gmt":"2025-01-02T05:41:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=2700"},"modified":"2025-03-25T23:45:38","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T18:15:38","slug":"shendurney-wildlife-sanctuary-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/shendurney-wildlife-sanctuary-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is located in the <strong>southern part of<\/strong> the <strong>Western Ghats<\/strong> in the Kollam district of <strong>Kerala<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It spans an area of approximately 172 sq.km. and forms <strong>part of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Most of the Sanctuary area is hilly and interspersed with ravines.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drainage<\/strong>: The major rivers are <strong>Shendurney, Kazhuthuruthy, and Kulathupuzha,<\/strong> which join together to form the Kallada River.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The vegetation primarily consists of <strong>tropical evergreen<\/strong> forests, <strong>semi-evergreen<\/strong> forests, and <strong>moist deciduous<\/strong> forests.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The name &#8220;<strong>Shendurney<\/strong>&#8221; is derived from the n<strong>ame of a tree species, Gluta travancorica, locally known as \u2018Chenkurunji\u2019<\/strong>, which is <strong>endemic <\/strong>to this region and found in abundance within the sanctuary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Notable mammals include <strong>elephants, tigers, leopards<\/strong>, gaurs (Indian bison), sambar deer, barking deer, wild boars, and bonnet macaques.<\/li>\n<li>The sanctuary also supports a significant population of <strong>Nilgiri langurs and lion-tailed macaques<\/strong>, both of which are <strong>endemic to the Western Ghats<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Over <strong>200 species of birds <\/strong>are recorded in the sanctuary.
