{"id":27038,"date":"2024-10-04T11:00:01","date_gmt":"2024-10-04T05:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27038"},"modified":"2025-04-08T06:39:33","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T01:09:33","slug":"what-is-the-european-union-deforestation-regulation-eudr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-european-union-deforestation-regulation-eudr\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was\u00a0<strong>scheduled to<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>commence on 30 December 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has been introduced to\u00a0<strong>limit the EU market\u2019s impact on global deforestation<\/strong>\/forest degradation and biodiversity loss, promote deforestation-free supply chains, reduce the EU\u2019s contribution to greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, and protect human rights and the rights of indigenous people.<\/li>\n<li>Under the EUDR,\u00a0<strong>certain products for export to<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>the<\/strong>\u00a0European Union (<strong>EU)<\/strong>\u00a0will\u00a0<strong>have to meet new rules relating to the land<\/strong>\u00a0on which they were produced.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Commodities targeted<\/strong>\u00a0by the EUDR are:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cattle<\/strong>\u00a0(including beef)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cocoa<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Wood<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Coffee<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Oil Palm<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rubber<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Soya<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It also\u00a0<strong>extends to<\/strong>\u00a0a range of relevant\u00a0<strong>products derived from these commodities<\/strong>, such as leather, chocolate, and paper.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exporters<\/strong>\u00a0will\u00a0<strong>need to prove that these goods<\/strong>\/products do not\u00a0<strong>originate from land<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>where forests haven&#8217;t been cut since Jan. 1, 2021<\/strong>, regardless of whether the deforestation was legal in the countries of origin.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They will\u00a0<strong>need to provide clear evidence<\/strong>\u00a0to EU operators and EU traders to support this.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Small businesses<\/strong>\u00a0further\u00a0<strong>down the supply chain<\/strong>\u00a0are subject to the\u00a0<strong>same obligations<\/strong>\u00a0and retain legal responsibility if regulations are violated.\n<ul>\n<li>But they are\u00a0<strong>not liable for due diligence for parts of their products<\/strong>\u00a0that were\u00a0<strong>already subject to review.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Failure to comply<\/strong>\u00a0can result in\u00a0<strong>financial penalties<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>restricted access to the EU market.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Country Benchmarking<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The EUDR will also have a country benchmarking system. This will determine the\u00a0<strong>deforestation and degradation risk of each nation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Nations will be classed on a\u00a0<strong>3-tier system<\/strong>, from low-risk to high-risk.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>nation\u2019s risk classification<\/strong>\u00a0will\u00a0<strong>establish the level of scrutiny by the EU<\/strong>. This includes the proportion of consignments inspected by the relevant authorities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is the European Commission?<\/h3>\n<p>The European Commission is the EU&#8217;s politically independent executive arm.
