


{"id":27054,"date":"2024-10-05T11:09:04","date_gmt":"2024-10-05T05:39:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27054"},"modified":"2025-10-14T12:00:37","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T06:30:37","slug":"negro-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/negro-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Key Facts about Negro River"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Negro River:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Rio Negro is one of the <strong>largest tributaries of the Amazon<\/strong> River.<\/li>\n<li>It is also <strong>one of the world\u2019s largest<\/strong> rivers <strong>in terms of discharge.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Course:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Origin<\/strong>: It originates in <strong>several headstreams<\/strong>, including the <strong>Vaup\u00e9s<\/strong> (Map\u00e9s) and the <strong>Guain\u00eda<\/strong>, which <strong>rise in the rain forest of eastern Colombia.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It flows along the <strong>Colombian and Venezuelan border<\/strong> before <strong>crossing into Brazil,<\/strong> where it becomes the Rio Negro.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Negro meanders generally east-southeastward, <strong>picking up the Branco<\/strong> River <strong>and other tributaries, to Manaus<\/strong>, Brazil (the largest city in the Amazon Rainforest).<\/li>\n<li>There it <strong>joins the Solim\u00f5es River<\/strong> to <strong>form the Amazon.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It passes through <strong>Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Its length is about <strong>1,400 miles (2,250 km),<\/strong> of which 850 miles <strong>(1,370 km)<\/strong> are <strong>in Brazil.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The river was <strong>named the Negro<\/strong>, which means black in Portuguese because of the <strong>water\u2019s dark coloration.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is caused by the <strong>decomposition of organic matter<\/strong> and the <strong>presence of tannins leached from surrounding vegetation<\/strong>, giving the river its distinctively rich coloration.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Rio Negro is the <strong>largest blackwater river in the world,<\/strong> and despite the coloration, the water <strong>contains little sediment<\/strong> and ranks as <strong>one of the cleanest rivers<\/strong> on Earth.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>reserves and national parks<\/strong> along the Rio Negro form a giant protected area called the <strong>Central Amazon Ecological Corridor<\/strong>, which is the <strong>largest section of protected Amazon Rainforest.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>At 52 million hectares, this is also one of the world\u2019s largest protected areas.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: Which are the main tributaries of the Amazon River?<\/h3>\n<p>The Amazon river has over 1,100 tributaries, 17 of which are over 1,500 kilometres (930 mi) long.
