


{"id":27113,"date":"2024-10-07T01:23:21","date_gmt":"2024-10-06T19:53:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27113"},"modified":"2025-04-08T07:12:27","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T01:42:27","slug":"progeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/progeria\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Progeria?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Progeria:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Progeria, also known as <strong>Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrom<\/strong>e, is an <strong>extremely rare<\/strong>, <strong>progressive genetic disorder<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It causes <strong>children to age rapidly<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>A tiny <strong>genetic mutation<\/strong> causes the disease.<\/li>\n<li>It is reported to occur in <strong>1 in 4 million newborns<\/strong> worldwide.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Newborns with the disorder <strong>appear to be healthy at birth<\/strong> but usually start to<strong> show<\/strong> signs of <strong>premature aging during<\/strong> their <strong>first one to two years of life<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Their <strong>growth rate slows,<\/strong> and they <strong>don\u2019t gain weight as expected.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Progeria <strong>doesn&#8217;t affect a child&#8217;s intelligence<\/strong> or brain development.<\/li>\n<li>However, their rapid aging <strong>causes distinct physical characteristics<\/strong>, including:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hair loss<\/strong> (baldness).<\/li>\n<li>Prominent eyes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aged, wrinkled skin<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>A thin, <strong>beaked nose.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Disproportionately small face<\/strong> compared to head size.<\/li>\n<li>Loss of fat under the skin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>As children with progeria get older, they <strong>get diseases<\/strong> you&#8217;d <strong>expect to see in people age 50 and older<\/strong>, including bone loss, hardening of the arteries, and heart disease.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>condition is always fatal<\/strong>. <strong>Heart problems or strokes<\/strong> are the <strong>eventual cause of death<\/strong> in most children with progeria.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>average life expectancy<\/strong> for a child with progeria is <strong>about 15 years<\/strong>. Some with the condition may die younger, and others may live longer, even to about 20 years.<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s <strong>no cure for progeria<\/strong>. A <strong>drug called lonafarnib<\/strong> has been shown to <strong>slow down the progression<\/strong> of the disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What are genetic disorders?<\/h3>\n<p>Genetic disorders occur when a mutation (a harmful change to a gene, also known as a pathogenic variant) affects your genes or when you have the wrong amount of genetic material.
